Episode 51: Juneteenth: It’s About Damn Time

Juneteenth. What is it about? Why is it important? Why is it just now becoming a holiday? The three of us explore the history, both recent and less so, that has led to the claiming of Juneteenth. The hard work of many has gone into bringing the holiday to mainstream consciousness, especially someone who would walk 1500 miles to see it signed into law.

Let’s just start out by meeting Opal Lee who i in her 90s and has pent her entire life working to make Juneteenth a national holiday!

Now this article is local to Philadelphia, but has a good bit of info in there related to the importance of oral storytelling in the Black community (and really, and community of color) and how oral storytelling has helped preserve the traditions of Juneteenth.

In this link you’ll find a story from a professor talking about how the story of Juneteenth is misrepresented often. It goes through some personal narrative and also talks about some historical reasons why the story is told a little off from reality.
