Episode 50: Nathan and the No Good Very Bad Day

CW: Animal Death, WW1 / WW2, Wounds
This week, we’ve got an excellent question from Hot dog Slim. What do Nathan’s Hot Dogs and dead whales have in common? We address the history of the celebrated Nathan’s Hot Dogs chain, peeling back the years to see where things could have gone terribly wrong. With hard work and dedication, hot dogs became a cultural favorite… even with mistakes along the way. And we’re definitely planning on talking about a few of those.

Before we even start on Nathan’s Hot Dogs, let’s look at the hot dog itself and the history of the food item. Starting from ancient roots and going until now, there’s an extra long history there.

And this is a history of Coney Island itself as it grew to be the attraction that it was by the time Nathan came to be there.

And for fun, here’s a look at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. We didn’t really get into it on the episode, but it is a tradition every 4th of July, and it has its own long history.

This link has some great info about how Nathan’s put himself above the rumors that his Hot Dogs were made of dog or horse. And includes the second verse to the song “Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone.”

And now, let’s look at the whale! This link has a lot of images of the whale, so if you’re not feeling up to looking at pictures of it, this link isn’t going to be for you. Other than the cool pictures, there’s lots of fascinating info about the whale’s history in here.

Here’s a link to the whale story without the pictures. It doesn’t have as many details in the story portion, but the majority of it is in there, and anyway, if you listen to the episode, we have the info.
