For content warnings this week, I’m giving you two different sets, as our talk of extreme haunts take two tones. This is our most extreme episode, so take care of yourselves, listeners.
CW (first half): Being Restrained, Simulated Waterboarding, Simulated Sexual Violence, Guns, Simulated Gun Violence
CW (second half): Real Violence, Teeth Trauma, Finger Trauma, Blood, Burial, Sexual Assault, Drowning, Body Fluids, Insects
Have you ever wanted to traumatize yourself on purpose? Well, good news, because you can PAY MONEY (or dog food??) to be traumatized by people who build their own haunted house attractions! We’re not talking about peeled grapes and fake blood at all. These are experiences that will absolutely maim your brain. So obviously… we point out the strangest ones out there. And at the end, we’ll give you a pleasant bit of off topic aftercare after the intensity of the topic.

This link will take you to a timeline for some of the history of the haunted house.
This book contains the party pamphlet I read from in the episode.
This link will take you to the website for Blackout, the first extreme haunted house we talked about. On their videos page, you can see their teasers for previous years.
This will link you to the documentary about Blackout over on Youtube.
This is Meredith Woerner’s story of her experience at Blackout. I read a few quotes from this article on the episode, and I recommend giving the rest of it a read.
Next, this link will take you to Miasma, the second extreme haunted house we talked about. Pop over to their experiences page to look at all their previous years, and look at the video page for some video teasers.
I read most of Carl Webb’s experience aloud on the episode, but I encourage you to go over there and read the rest of it so you’re getting the bits that I left out. And there are pictures!
This is Matthew Oldenburg’s experience with Miasma’s Desecration of the Seven Witches. It’s longer than the previous one, and there are pictures here too. It’s a great read about how, while Miasma is extreme, it’s not gratuitous like others are, but really nuanced.
This one is an interview with the owners (is that even the right word?) of four extreme haunts where they talk about aggression, their actors, and aftercare. So here we’ve got featured Miasma, Heretic, Victim Experience, and Faceless Ventures.
Alright, friends, this link will take you to an article where you can read up on McKamey Manor, described alternately as one of the scariest places in America or a torture chamber in disguise depending on who you ask. Be warned though, there’s disturbing descriptions and images inside.
Here is a video (7 minutes) that takes you inside McKamey Manor. It comes with a warning that it has graphic images as well.
Finally, here’s a list of 11 Extreme Haunted Houses from around the U.S. There’s some interesting images, but the only thing that might bother you in here that I can see is there’s several clowns.
