Episode 141: Tales of Cannibalism Present

CW: Death, Cannibalism, Bodily Harm, Eating A Fetus, Motor Vehicle Accident, Harm to Animals (brief mention)

With cannibalism past covered last episode, we present cannibalism present. We have five cases of legal (arguably) cannibalism within the last 25 years, from canned human meatballs to a bit of food critique. Join us to learn about the ethics of consuming human flesh in the present day!

I cannot stress enough that this link has an extreme content warning on it. This talks about the shock artist Zhu Yu and his “art” where he ate, supposedly, an aborted fetus. There was some speculation that this was just duck or chicken with a baby doll head on it, but the images themselves are still disturbing.

If you want to view all the images, click here but otherwise, here is a single one. The link also has pictures from his other art like when he cut his own fat off and sewed it to a pig or used a human arm in an art installation.

Here is an interview with Zhu Yu. It’s a Youtube video, but because it’s age restricted, I can’t just link it here. You’ll have to click the button to go watch it directly on Youtube.

Here is an article about Marco Evaristti, who made meatballs from his own fat.

Marco is also a shock artist. There’s this article asking “Is This Art” and I think we all on the podcast also had that question. About the meatballs and the animal abuse allegations he’s also been in trouble for.

Here’s a picture of the meatballs made from his liposuctioned out fat.

Here’s the ridiculous label he made for the cans of meatballs he made.

And if you’re wondering, here’s just one of the animal abuse issues where he put a bunch of goldfish in a blender and asked people who visited his gallery to turn the blenders on.

Let’s move on an talk about Mao Sugiyama, who we all enjoyed learning about. They are an artist in Japan who had elective genital removal surgery and auctioned off the right to eat their penis to five people, then threw a big party surrounding the event. They said they did it to raise awareness on “sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people.”

This is the party Mao had when they were celebrating getting their penis off and eating it with those five people.

This is a picture of the cooked penis. There’s more pictures in the article, but here’s just a single one.

Now let’s talk about Reza Aslan. He really bothered the Hindu community when he participated in a TV series that focused on extreme fringe communities in religion and the very first episode was about Aghori, a sect of Hinduism that is so tiny and dying out and intentionally culturally insensitive. Here’s an article about that.

This is the full episode of the show. You’re going to want to start at 22 minutes in to see the part we’re talking about in the episode, if it doesn’t just start there.

Here’s the wikipedia page on who the Aghori are as a people.

We talked about this infamous Reddit story of the guy who served his friends tacos made from his own amputated foot. Don’t worry, they all knew what was happening and agreed to it. The man had been in an accident and when he had the foot amputated, he asked to keep it, which you can legally do if you sign the right paperwork, so the hospital let him take it home. Then he asked his friends “hey, you know how we said if we had the chance to try human meat we would? I’m calling that in.” Here’s an article.

And if you’re interested, here’s the AMA from Reddit with the Foot Taco Guy. It’s pretty interesting!

Here is the collection of images of his foot and the meat of it, which just looks like any other steak.

And last we talked about Florentina Holzinger, who we also enjoyed learning about. She also considers herself a form of shock artist, but she puts on operas. The one we talked about was one about “the patriarchal structures of the church.” From the Sancta page: “Isn’t there a little bit of sorcery in every mass? Don’t they turn bread into flesh, wine into blood? Florentina Holzinger uses Paul Hindemith’s short opera “Sancta Susanna” about a nun’s experience of sexual awakening as the launching pad for her captivating version of a Catholic service.” There’s nudity, religious imagery turned sexual, and blood.

Here’s an article about it.

And here’s the artist page where you can read what the show’s about. I would Really encourage you to click on this link and watch the trailer for the show cause it is amazing.

This is A trailer, but it’s not the really cool one from the link above. This one is on Youtube, so you’re getting the vibe, but not the majority of the blood and nudity.
