Episode 112: Jesus vs The Devil

CW: Death (by Fire, Drowning, Oil, Choking, Poison), Religious Persecution

This week we cover Isa’s question about medieval law! We venture first into ordeals and then address a mock trial between none other than Jesus and the Devil. We debate on who we would side with and the legalities of the modern day. And somehow, boobs are involved?

If you’re about to read JSTOR articles (or have a way to get into them for free) this is a good read about the ordeals of the middle ages.

This article specifically talks about the trial by ordeal called Sassywood and how it is still going on today, though it is illegal, and how it effects the people who undergo it.

This is an article interviewing Karl Shoemaker, who wrote the paper The Devil at Law in the Middle Ages that I read for this episode.

This is the full paper with the entire mock trial contained in it. It also has the explanation of how medieval lawyers though and how canon law worked.
