Episode 59: The Tear Down: Frisbeeing Through Space

CW: Extensive talk of Christianity / God, Manipulation
Standing in the desert, admiring the flat plane of the earth… it stretches on forever. Flat. Flat… because the earth has no curves, not a single one, according to some people. And also, the sun? It’s very close. And— Sorry, we didn’t mean to descend into chaos and scare you. Listen in. Learn about how some people believe the Earth is flat. And then eviscerate the idea.
Let’s start with this Flat Earth map. You can see here as we talk about it the way the continents are smooshed into the center and out of place, the ice rim at the edge, and tiny sun and moon that Karen is so upset about.
Here I’m giving you the Square Flat Earth with the angels at the corners and the Earth scooped down like a paper plate (as M says). This one set Karen into a lesson on the Biblical verses the Flat Earth movement uses and context of them.

This article is going to look at that square map and talk about the creation of it and what exactly is going on in it. You can’t really read it in the picture, so this article will explain.

This one is going to talk about the ancient history of our beliefs when it comes to the shape of the Earth. I want to put this one first because the first thing we’re always told is that ancient people believed the Earth was flat, and that’s simply a myth.

This question was not just what the flat earth theory was but also why people believe it, so this article will go into the why of it. More than that, it will go into why we shouldn’t roll our eyes and think of conspiracy theorists as harmless.

This article is a longer read but a really good one that goes into who Flat Earthers are, the contradiction of how they believe, some history of the movement, and some various beliefs.

This article is really good for looking at both factions of the Flat Earth community and getting voices from inside both. It has quotes from a lot of Flat Earthers and most notably it talks to people who started out trying to prove the theory wrong and ended up converting in.

This article approaches the belief in a Flat Earth from a physics perspective and offers explanations and proof against the theory from that side of things. It includes quotes from experts in several fields but most notably from hard science.
