Episode 135: Mummy Issues

CW: Death, Dead Bodies, Desecration of Corpses, War

Medicine and linguistics come together to create an unlikely event: medical cannibalism! Once upon a time, Europeans were eating mummies by the ton. Real mummies. Fake mummies. All sorts! And all for the health benefits of… dead bodies?

This week, we talked about eating mummies. We talked last week about using mummies ground up to make Mummy Brown, a paint color the Victorians were quite fond of. For this first link, it explains what Mummia is, why the Victorians thought it was medicine, and everything that went into the practice.

If you’re looking for something more academic, this article explains a lot of the same things that the previous one did, but it’s much more in-depth.

If you’re like M and really enjoy reading books about these topics, then here’s a book M read for this episode. It’s called The Spirit of Ancient Egypt by Ana Ruiz.

This is just the Wikipedia page for Mummia so you can have the quick read and see some pictures.

And just for your knowledge, this is the page about bitumen.
