Episode 124: Conspiracy of the Mind

CW: Death, Loss of Privacy

With the close of the year and the advent of holiday vacations, we present a chattersode answering Moth’s question! Fae asked what conspiracy theories we do— or could— believe in. We end up on a ride discussing Abe Lincoln, spying tech, and the death of the internet. Maybe in this episode we’ll convince YOU to believe in conspiracies…

First, let’s look at Karen’s “I could be persuaded to believe this” theory that Vice President Andrew Johnson was part of a plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.

This paper talks about the assassination attempt and does mention that the vice president was brought up as a possible conspirator in the plot to assassinate Lincoln.

This link just goes through the people who were actually accused of the plot to assassinate Lincoln.

Karen also had a theory which is fairly popular the when Coca-Cola introduced their New Coke flavor, it was intentionally bad so that people would have such an uproar wanting the old flavor back, that sales would soar. Here’s just an article talking about the flop that was New Coke.

M talked about the fact that your phone and other electronic devices are listening to everything you say and everything going on around you at all times. This, honestly, isn’t even a conspiracy so much as a government admitted fact.

Remy’s conspiracy that they believe that we are heading toward actually making a reality is the Dead Internet Theory. This is the theory that all or most of the activity on the internet is made up of interactions between bots and AI. According to cybersecurity experts, we’re halfway to this being true. Here’s some reading on what this theory actually is in more depth.

And this article has quotes from security experts and also the quotes from the guy who originally proposed this theory in the first place.
