Episode 63: Stede-y On, Pirate

CW: Slavery, Murder, Gun Fights, Imprisonment, Death
Blackbeard. Captain Kidd. Stede Bonnet? Pirates have an illustrious and romanticized history, making the golden age of pirates capture the imaginations of so many. Especially lately, with some very queer pirates in some very queer shows. We dive into one in particular: Stede the Gentleman Pirate and his babygirl status in Blackbeard’s lap! How much truth is there to it?

This article is a good abridged version of the story of Stede Bonnet told in a humorous tone of voice. This one talks about all the same things we did but a lot quicker, and it has quotes from the trail papers and illustrations. I suppose I need to put a content warning that there is a drawing of Stede’s hanging at the end of the article.

This article is a great, longer summary of the important bits of Stede’s pirate career, and it includes all the pictures I shared with Karen and M! So it has various portraits, a reproduction of his flag, an illustration of his hanging, and a portrait of Blackbeard.

This link takes you to an article that focuses more on his final days of running from the law and his harrowing final fight at Cape Fear. The font is really small, and I figure I should tell you all. I have extremely bad vision so I needed to magnify it, and it feels worth telling anyone out there with vision problems about the tiny font. But the content and the painting of Stede is good!

Now, frankly, for this one, you don’t need any other link than this one from the Library of Congress. They are a wonderful resource for first-hand accounts and images. So here is the page about Stede, and they have his entire trail transcript.
