Episode 45: 15 Minutes Away

CW: COVID-19, the Far Right, Conspiracy Theories

Don’t you wish you can nip out and make it anywhere on foot? Don’t you wish that you didn’t have to drive forever just to get around the corner? Well, come on in and give 15 minute cities a gander! The good, the bad— we talk about it all in this episode.

This week, we answered a listener question about whether or not 15 minute cities could work. While I was doing research on the subject, I found out there were a lot of fears and conspiracies surrounding the concept. So let’s just start with a diagram so everyone can picture it.

This is the article where I got this diagram. It talks about Oxford as an example of a city that is trying to work on adding some 15 minute city areas and figure out how to make it work. It is a quick read that looks at the pros and cons of this setup and why some groups of people have developed conspiracy theories around it.

This article specifically talks about the conspiracy theory angle and more specifically where it came from and what’s up with that.

This article takes a look at a particular aspect of the 15 minute city and whether or not it is feasible for a certain group: Children and Caregivers.

This one takes a critical look at the 15 minute city and whether or not it can work for disabled bodies. All three of us here at WWYAT are disabled so this point is important to us in particular.

Finally, this one is just a FAQ article about the 15 min city and what you need to know about the concept that could be the future of urban planning.
